Tower defense games constitute a subgenre of real-time strategy games. The main task for the player is to destroy waves of enemies which follow predetermined paths. In order to succeed the players set up a number of towers and turrets that defend the base. In most of the games of the genre, you will build several types of towers that can be further improved and upgraded. In addition to the ranged attack towers, you have the ability to also place units that attack at certain intervals.
The popularity of this type of game began with the development of the strategy games genre. One of the first games to be released in the tower defense genre was Ramparts for Atari computers (1990). The player’s task was to defend the castle with the help of the weapons strategically placed on the walls. The first modern tower defense titles were creative mods of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Age of Empires.
Another milestone in the development of the tower defense games genre was the growing popularity of online games. Simple browser games, thanks to the development of Adobe Flash technology, have made the tower defense genre available to everyone. One of the best-known browser titles is Kingdom Rush – released by Armor Games and also Gemcraft from the same developer
Nowadays, more and more developers of full-fledged games decide to base their production on the tower defense theme. There are more and more advanced tower defense titles released for PCs and for consoles. The mobile gaming market is also developing strongly, and there were many good titles providing great tower defense experience.
An interesting example of this genre of games is Plants vs. Series. Zombies. Sometimes the devs have also experimented with the reversal of the roles in the game, giving the players control of the incoming hordes. An example would be Anomaly: Warzone by the Polish company 11-bit studios.
